  • 3 Point Field Goal

I was watching a game between Norths and Newtown in 1982 and Norths half Paul McCaffery kicks a successful field goal and then gets ironed out by a Newtown player. The ref Jack Danzey awards the field goal and then awards the penalty in front of the post for the late high hit on McCaffery - and Norths John Gray kick the goal ( Rex called it a 7 point field goal but he meant 3- he also said it was Mick Ryan who hit McCaffery but Ryan was a good 20 metres away- but thats why i loved Rex!)

Its around the 5.10 min mark

So my question is to King Salvo ( im sure he will be the only one who knows!! ) When did they remove the 3 point field goal- or does it still exist but not being enforced?

Still exists. Commentators were only talking about it a few weeks ago when (can't rememeber who) got hit after he popped a FG. Commentators were debating over whether it should've been a 3 pt FG. I suppose these days there technically must be a 4 pt FG too.

      Still valid as Hawkeye said

      Section 13.10 states:

      (a) If a player fouls an opponent who is attempting a drop goal, a penalty kick shall be awarded in front of the goal posts.

      (b) If the attempt at drop goal is successful, a kick at goal must be taken from the penalty kick and play re-started from the centre of the halfway line irrespective of the outcome of that kick.

      (c) If the attempt at drop goal is unsuccessful, the penalty kick can be taken in any manner provided for in the Laws and play re-started according to the outcome of that kick.
