  • NYC squad starting to look a bit thin on the ground

the NYC boys have done an amazing job to sit in the top 4 going into the last 5 weeks of the competition, but injuries and releases are starting to take a toll on the squad and are vulnerable over coming weeks, there are 8 players there that would easily walk into our best 17.

players injured and gone for the season
    -Cordner
    -Hands
    -Moeakiola

    players currently injured
    -Jones
    -Eshman

    players released
    -Williamson
    -Du Plesis

    players in top grade
    -Leilua
    -Friend

It still looks a good team on paper this week fletch, especially with Brunton back.

Those players you named fletch are key players for our NYC side. We are still fielding a very good side so the depth is amazingly good, especially considering we can still call up Dane Atkinson, Tau Tau Moga and Henare Wells from the SG Ball side. If we had those 9 players named in NYC, we'd take it out hands down IMO.

with all those players unavailable it makes the side competitive rather than outstanding, Cowboys must be favourites to win it with the Bulldogs in unbelieveable form at the moment.

As a result of a few key injuries, SG Ball forwards Nick Dorante and Kane Evans have been drafted into the squad and are training with them.

They'll get Nick Eshman and Ben Jones back in the next couple of weeks I think but last I heard Moeakiola and Hands were due to come back either before the finals or the first week of the finals. If we can get those 4 back, we'll be in a good position IMO.

Gman, good to see young Kane Evans drafted up to the NYC side. He is a good, talented player. Although I'd much prefer to play Adam Brent before using Evans. Brent is a very, very good young player. He is as tough as nails. I'm hoping he can get a run in the next few weeks.

              Footy,
Kane impressed towards the back-end of the SG Ball season and was rewarded with a spot on the bench for the final. Goes well when he comes on with his size (6" 6 & 105kg) & initiates 2nd phase play with good off loads. I agree with you about Adam Brent....he plays tough and should get a go as well.

Last Sunday morning i watched the replay of the Arrive Alive game btw Matraville High & St Dominics. Our SG Ball players - Jared Allen & Adam Brent were outstanding and Kane monstered the opposition in attack & defence. Some other Roosters Ball players featuring for Matraville are Nick Dorante, Paul Rokolati & El-Zabadieh. Next time their game is replayed on CH9 i will remember to let youse know.

BTW, last Tuesday night was the trials for next years U20's squad. Those too old out of this years Ball team had to trial.

Jared Allen is another young player who is quite good. He is pretty versatile, able to play fullback, in the halves or at hooker. Paul Rokolati is also very handy, made NSW CHS U18 this year and was very unlucky not to have made Australian Schoolboys by all reports.

How did the trial go? Any players who stood out Gman?

I Googled his name and extracted this from an ABC News article dated 23.4.2010

While the West Australian Rugby League says it's too early to tell what impact this will have on its NRL bid, even from here it's clear the code is in for a torrid time.

"We'll watch closely as things unfold over the coming weeks. If the Storm's future is under a cloud then the structure of the NRL could be essentially affected," says WARL chief executive John Sackson.

The WA side is one of a number of state-based clubs hoping to be included in an expanded competition.

There's little doubt the success, now tarnished, of the Melbourne Storm gave the code's plans for expansion impetus.

But, the problems facing the code are unlikely to blunt the enthusiasm young players in the West have for league.

They may be few but they're passionate.

Seventeen year old Curtis Rona has dreamed of playing rugby league at the highest level for a long time.

He switched from rugby union to league this year, playing in the national Under 18 competition with the WA Reds SG Ball side.

The versatile player, who's either in the centre or the second row, has just signed a three year deal to play rugby league with the Sydney Roosters.

"Curtis is a fit, fast and strong player who is defensively strong and excellent in attack," says WA Reds assistant coach Daniel Green.

While Curtis is delighted his talents have been recognised he would ultimately love to play for a national team based in Perth.

"Oh definitely I would love it if League came back to Perth," he says.

"There are around 1200 new people moving to Western Australia every week and it's fair to say a portion of them are rugby league fans from the eastern states, New Zealand and the United Kingdom," says Mr Sackson.

Recruiting juniors to the game is one of the tasks ahead.

While 1500 juniors play rugby league in Perth, rugby union has around 3500 participating, soccer attracts 24,000 juniors and around 90,000 kids participate in AFL.

It's unlikely the fallout from the Melbourne Storm will discourage WA parents from letting their kids play the code but will it discourage sponsors from climbing on board the WARL bid ?

Despite the furore, the WARL is confident that Western Australia will once again field a team in the national competition.

Curtis Rona is looking forward to playing with the Sydney Roosters and is hoping to make it to the club's first grade side.

But, one day Curtis would like to run out on to Perth Oval with a West Australian national rugby league team.

                      Good luck young man!

imo Perth Reds will return in 2013 along with the CC Bears. I sure hope so.

looks like the massive number of unavailable players is finally starting to bite we are getting smashed by a very ordinary Sharks side tonight.

I agree. There are plenty of key players missing from the side (Cordner, Kheirallah, Jones, Moeakiola, Brunton, Lowe and even Leilua) and they were always going to struggle. They've been doing very well to win the amount of games they have. With a full side, they'll be even harder to beat.
