  • Mortimer targets Roosters utility NRL spot

Daniel Mortimer admits he thought his days at the Sydney Roosters were numbered when the club signed James Maloney, but coach Trent Robinson has given him a new lease of life.

The young playmaker's career has been something of a stop-start affair since making his debut in 2009 for Parramatta.

His form midway through that season was a major factor in the Eels' magical march to the grand final and they fought tooth and nail to keep him after Canterbury tried to tempt him to the club his father Peter and uncles Steve and Chris served with such distinction.

However, things turned sour at Parramatta as Mortimer struggled with form and confidence and was granted an early release at the end of the 2011 season to link up with the Roosters.

In his first campaign under Brian Smith, the 23-year-old spent more time with NSW Cup side Newtown than in the NRL, skippering the Jets to the lower-grade premiership.

And when it was announced Maloney was coming across from the Warriors last year, Mortimer admits he feared the worst and was tempted by the prospect of moving on again.

"There was some interest from a couple of clubs and I would have certainly considered it," Mortimer told AAP.

"But Trent came in and told me straight away that he wanted me to stay and he had faith in me, which was great to hear."

Mortimer has performed well in both of the Roosters' trial matches, scoring tries in each.

He accepts Mitchell Pearce and Maloney will be the starting halves this year, but his goal is to develop into a top-quality utility off the bench.

"I've played most of my career in the halves and not much at hooker, but I've enjoyed it," he said.

"I've got a few digs in the face from diving in low out of dummy-half, but that's all good.

"The utility spot is between myself and Nafe Seluini, who is a good player, but he was injured for the Tigers game last Saturday so hopefully that gives me the jump on him.

"Guys like Kurt Gidley and Cooper Cronk have played utility at Origin and Test level and it's an important position in the modern-day game.

"I am off contract this year so I know I need to take my chance when it comes. By having that versatility, I know it can only help me in the long run."

Mortimer should be used tactically imo.
in games against teams with big forwards, we should use him as a weapon against tired men late in halves.
in games against smaller teams, we should have four forwards on the bench, with no utility.
he shouldn't be on the bench week in week out for the sake of it.

I think Seluini is far more potent out of dummy half but lets see how he goes.

Good kid with a big heart and skills to boot but I wouldn't play him against Souths, they will target him and Maloney in the defensive line, their big mobile forwards including Inglis and Sutton will run over the top of Morts, go with a big bench or Seluini.

To me this is a fullbacks job, ala smith out ball to Cronk to slater inside. That's how you expose tired/lazy middle men. Cpl quick short passes that take forwards one way then the other in two steps.

Even if he isn't the world's greatest player you have to admire the attitude of this kid. I hope he nails that utility position.

                Ditto.
He's a good kid & gives his all. Hope he gets his confidence back this year & nails it.

Always had confidence in Morts prevailing over Seluini

I guess Robbo needs a utility as insurance but after watching Jakes effort in the cup it will be tempting to play 4 x heavies off the bench.

Jake looks close to 80 mins, depending who we're playing SBW could be almost a utility on a bench full of heavies.

If not its likely Maubs or Morts to support Jake

Unlike the other 2 contenders Morts has a kicking game, he gets to dummy half well & provides sharp passes, is quick in support

He is nowhere near as good but gee he reminds me of Craig Wing in many ways. Great attitude and one of the best at backing up/support play.
Nice to have competition with Seluni and versatility in selection options. Agree that he should be selected with discretion.
I saw him play as a u14 year old in Orange - my newphen played in the same team. Good grounding and good parents. I'd imagine good to have around the club.
I hope he makes it. Been a challenging road for him. Character building.

I hope Daniel Mortimer plays a role this season. He could be a our Nat Wood - Kidding.

I believe he can play at this level and if he does score a contract with another team I'll be happy for him because he's attitude playing behind Braith and Mitch was first class.

                        Wish him well.

I would like to see more of Mortimer. I think if he were to be a regular utility he would regain his form of 09. I think he has a lot more to offer off the bench than Seluini. I think Seluini is a better dummy half option, but in this day and age hookers should be playing 80 min and thats what we should expect from Friend (or Seluini if selected over Friend). Mortimer can cover way more positions 1,6,7,9 and would be very dangerous coming into the game late and causing havoc to tiring oposition forwards.

I think we under-used him last season...hopefully he plays a major role in this season!

A zippy hooker would always b welcomed. Just think it's more consistent way to exploit what kegs was talking about. And friends the best man for that in my opinion. Then you talk dummy half runs, where my issue with morts is he is nowhere near as strong as the likes of a Issak Luke to take a hit, rebound and create the second phase or break a tackle. I intend to think he will get dominated quite easily and we would lose that roll on.

If all our players had Morts heart, desire etc we would be 5 times premiers. Can't fault him there.

I was lucky enough to be invited to a couple of training sessions and Mortimer was the first player there each time.

He is a good support player up the middle.
