To me it's an issue because I'd say very few NRL players smoke these days. As I said before... I doubt Cam Smith is a durry muncher. If Friend wants to be as good as Cam Smith (which he can IMO) then he needs to show the same level of commitment to his health.
In the back of my mind there's the question of whether his lungs got hurt more easily and more severely because he's a smoker as well. If he'd been available against Penrith we could have won (it was a 1 point difference) and we could have been lining up for a GF.
Notably Robbo doesn't see Friend as an 80 minute player. When Morts left, that HURT because Friend needs to be subbed out for the last 10 mins of each half. Note: Cam Smith is significantly older and doesn't need a youngster to sub in and play the last 10 of each half for him!! May I suggest that we need Friend to be an 80 minute player... smoking significantly reduces your VO2 max... I would suggest that quitting could stop him slowing down in the last 10 of each half. He shouldn't need a fitter player to play the last 10 of each half for him. He's an 80 minute player and needs to solidify that rather than getting worse over time (partly due to smoking).
If we have a $hit season next year and Friend is injured/under-performing then watch out buddy!!!!!
