Very sad news. Reminds me of Simon Dwyer from the Tigers. Both good kids that played tough in the toughest game of all.
Hope the NRL looks after them to the maximum.
What ever happened top that Parramatta forward that suffered brain injury 10-15 years ago. Is he employed by the NRL or the Eels is any capacity?

Take a bex and have a lie down for 5 min buddy. If we keep outlawing every thing in the tackle it will turn into touch footy. It was a freak accident that is all. Why do you even watch the game if all you ever do is complain and write how shit the administration is.
I hope the kid takes this in his stride (not meant as a joke) and goes on to do great things with his life even after this terrible accident.
My best mates brother is a paraplegic, dirt bike accident when he was 16, now 26 and is a great bloke who has not let his disability stop him from doing things most able bodied people do.
I'm sure the Knights AND the NRL will make sure Alex is looked after for the rest of his life.
The refs are far from perfect...as our illustrious coach pointed out recently on the world stage.
The NRL is also far from perfect...it employs them, and runs every facet of the game.
Alex McKinnon is now a quadriplegic, after a lifting tackle...like it or not.
The NRL likes it or not.
How long will the NRL care for Alex McKinnon?
For his whole life?
He'll need money, and lots of it, to have any sort of life...unable to move his arms or legs forevermore.
Caring is one thing, actual financial support thru a multi million dollar insurance payout is quite another.
I've been around a long time, and seen many things...including employers of all descriptions.
Better "touch footy" than "broken neck" footy.
I can't see how banning all lifting tackles would change the game one iota, except save players from getting broken necks, with all that entails.
If Alex McKinnon hadn't been lifted off the ground he wouldn't now have a broken neck.
No Harvard degree needed for this one either.Last edited by bondi-boy; 04-01-2014, 05:54 AM.

They give unconditional love, smiles, and happy greetings.

Look at the bloke from the panthers who became a paraplegic after a scrum years back, Gus said he is working for the club and has done since the accident and will do for as long as he wants too. The Knights will be no different. Alex will be given all the help he needs, have a bit of faith mate, there's no need to highlight the negatives at every oppurtunity.
Banning lifting tackles isn't the issue. It's the wrestle that's causing a lot of these dangerous looking tackles.
You tell me what was so dangerous about a T.Gillmiester up under the ribs driving a player onto his back, with his hands between his legs lifting and driving. Steve Menzies was another, had a great technique of driving a player on to his back. Out of a ALL the tackles made in a rugby league match over the many years, how many have left a bloke paralysed? Not many I bet. I'll say it again, it was a freak accident, nothing more, nothing less. There was no intent to drive the bloke head first into the turf, it wasn't one of the uglier ones where the tackler is standing nearly upright with his arms over his head and dropping the player.
