I also don't believe we ranked last in all the important stats that wins you games consistently but happy to be proven wrong. What are those stats you consider important to winning games?
In this modern game you give yourself an uphill battle to win & compete on an even playing field when you spend so much time without the ball.or a fair share.
Our defence isn't generally good enough like the Bondi Wall of old to compensate for that.
This is something a Robbo coached team cant address appropriately year after year.
And if we are going to be a fair dinkum team come finals time the 1 - 24 stat must narrow not keep getting bigger

One thing I find disingenuous about the Robbo apologists is the heart breaking finals lose to the Storm last year with a spare parts team which everyone crowed about.
But a year later with a stronaer team to have 48 put on us in a weak surrender......
There's mostly silence.

We need a numbers guru to really drill into Trent how the game has changed and maybe something will finally click.
I didn't watch the grand final but I looked at the stats from time to time and it was fascinating to me at one time both teams had completed 17/20 sets yet Penrith had a 56/44 posssession lead with about 4 mins more ball. Penrith do this time and time again so it's very deliberate, they wear teams down by having far more possession than anyone else, it's quite masterful how they did that whilst having the same amount of sets as Melbourne. From memory the offloads and metres gained from Penrith were significantly higher yet the linebreaks were even and Melbourne led 6-4 - Penrith are coached to to win over the 80 mins. This is something that is completely non-existent for us, you can pretty much tell if we are "on" after the first few mins and if we aren't then it's either going to be a tryfest coinflip game or a slowly dragged out clunky loss to the poorer teams or a clear loss to the better teams, we play an erratic and unreliable brand of footy.
Now to be fair to Trent a lot of this issue isn't helped by the lack of onfield leadership, Teddy is more a lead by example kind of nice guy - this team does need an old head to lay down the law and keep the players on task and hopefully Chad Townsend can provide some of that as Cronk did during his 2 years at the club, it's desperately needed.

His coaching will be fully tested with a weaker squad on paper. If he can get us to the top four with a weaker squad plus Walker and Brandon missing half the season then he would have done well. Anything less and serious questions will be asked.

Simple.
How to win premierships...
play like the Panthers.
Play like the Panthers did in the GF yesterday.
Big forwards battering the opposition defence into submission, legally.
Big, solid, tough team battering the opposition attack into submission, legally.
...with very few mistakes.
It's all on tape.
Wise coaches will study and copy.

Key ingredients imo in the 6 again era are patience, the ability to play the long game, respect for the ball and good discipline. Gone are the days when you can continuously give away penalties in the red zone and back your D. The game is too fast now.
Fatigue plays a big part in deciding outcomes. Ivan Cleary appears to be the only coach that get's this

Storm played well for 25 minutes. Scored a try to lead 6-0
Then dropped a bomb...Panthers ball 10m out.
Panthers ran around passing, getting tackled, passing the ball around...then on the 4th tackle...as they often do...received...wait for it.....
...a 6 again!
They scored a try 4 tackles later.
That was the end of the Storm.
Their truckload of mistakes started and never stopped.
They kicked out on the full from the kick off.
etc.Last edited by bondi.boy; 10-07-2024, 12:51 PM.

On average we conceded the 4th fewest run metres, the 4th fewest linebreaks & we conceded the 5th fewest tries.
We ranked 1st for tries scored, 2nd for linebreaks and 11th for metres gained.
These are all metrics I would consider important to being a good side. The only one that checks out is penalties where we did rank last and have for the last 2 decades.
I think its a huge overstatement to say we rank last in all stats that matter.

Interesting to note that last night all 4 halves ran for over 100M. Something that we lacked this finals series was our halves running and taking the line on. They don’t threaten the line enough to create opportunities for our wider men.
Luai last night always looked threatening cutting back on the inside. The same with Munster I thought he looked strong when taking the line on.
Cleary - 212M & 31 tackles with a busted shoulder. Gee he really is a once in a generation player.

Embarrassing finals exit & cant narrow the gap between the other 2.
Woeful 1 -24 record.
Defence pretty ordinary close to the line.
Last in all the important stats that wins you games constantly.
Does any of that resonate with you?
He was one of the best coaches but not anymore, I don't think he has adapted to the six again era.
The team are probably the worst disciplined team in the NRL and you will always struggle with the amount of six agains and silly penalties we give away.
We can score points but we should have been working on discipline, fix that and we would have had a better shot at making the grand final.
Bellarmy has always had a team in the finals, he adapts as the game changes and the Storm system has zero problems replacing players that leave.
Cleary is the same, they lose players and someone better steps up and they don't seem to have any shortage there.
Nearly all coaches that have had good run seem to fall away after 5-10 years when they don't adapt.
Hasler was a great coach 10-15 years ago but his game plan doesn't work now.
Bennett was up the top for so long but having the Broncos team had made his job easier, he hasn't really done much in the last decade.
I don't see us winning under Robbo, we will be a fringe 8 team next year or possibly worse. We are going through a rebuild and the new crop of players need to not make it hard on themselves by giving away penalties and six again's every 5 minutes.
It's easy to say sack him but who do you bring in, the only two that could do better are Bellamy and Cleary and both won't leave their current teams.
